On October 25, 2016, the Kazakh Ablai khan University of International Relations and World Languages (Ablai khan University), together with Southwest University in Chongqing, China, signed an agreement to establish the Confucius Institute at Ablai khan University. Officially established on January 4, 2017, by order No. 07-M of Ablai khan University, the Institute held its grand opening on April 19, 2017, and began full operations in September 2017.
Core Goals and Objectives of the Institute:
- Offering Chinese language courses to students at various levels.
- Organizing short-term courses to help students prepare for Chinese proficiency exams (HSK, HSKK).
- Conducting HSK and HSKK exams twice a year.
- Hosting events that celebrate and explore Kazakh and Chinese cultures.
- Providing seminars to enhance the qualifications of Chinese language instructors.
- Developing textbooks, learning materials, and dictionaries focused on Chinese language and culture.
- Arranging sinology lectures for students and faculty interested in Chinese studies.
- Organizing scientific conferences and round tables on Chinese studies.
- Implementing joint research projects with Chinese universities and research institutions.
Key Cultural Events
Each year, the Confucius Institute holds various cultural events, including masterclasses, conferences, and competitions. Among these, the "Abai Readings" competition, conducted in three languages (Kazakh, Russian, and Chinese), has become especially popular and is now a signature event. Other key events include the methodological competition "Best Chinese Language Teacher" and the international scientific-practical conference "Chinese Studies in Kazakhstan and Abroad."
Our Achievements
Students trained by the Confucius Institute participate in international competitions, often achieving high results and winning awards. Notably, our students twice placed among the top three in Asia at the annual international "Chinese Bridge" language competition (Azim Sultanov in 2019, and Kirill Len in 2021). In 2024, Aruzhan Kulmagambetova took 1st place among Asian participants and ranked 4th among contestants from five continents, competing against 147 participants from 130 countries.
